Surgical AI Hub Germany: 4th Hackathon in Heidelberg – Halfway There!

We at Chimaera are thrilled to have joined the fourth Hackathon of the BMBF-funded project Surgical AI Hub Germany in the historic university city of Heidelberg, bringing our expertise in AI-based medical image processing to the table!

The two-day event took place from May 30 to June 1, 2025, on the Neuenheimer Feld campus and marked a major milestone: At the halfway point of the project (runtime: 01/01/2024 – 12/31/2026), we had the opportunity to take stock of what we've achieved and set our sights on the road ahead—together with our passionate, interdisciplinary team.

Progress and New Perspectives

Once again, it was incredibly inspiring to reconnect with our dedicated project team and reflect on the developments of the past few months. We at Chimaera showcased our current web app workflow for annotating endoscopic videos and received valuable feedback for refining our demonstrator platform.

Our focus was on preparing for EAES2025 in Belgrade—and thanks to the insightful input from our medical experts and project partners, we were able to make key adjustments and sharpen our goals even further.

Ambitious Stretch Goals for the Second Half of the Project

With sleeves rolled up, we’re diving into the next phase: sophisticated annotation techniques, improved interface usability, and a robust expansion of our test cases are now high on our agenda. The challenges are ambitious—but our team is ready to take them on.

A heartfelt thank-you to Heidelberg University for the outstanding hospitality, and to Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Martin Wagner, Marlene Karl, and the entire organizing team for hosting such a well-executed and successful event!

We’re already looking forward to the next meet-up with our project partners – and to continuing the exchange of ideas and results within the Surgical AI Hub Germany.
