Surgical AI Hub Germany: Final sprint towards EAES 2026 at the 6th hackathon in Berlin

From June 15–16, the team of Surgical AI Hub Germany met for its sixth hackathon – this time in Berlin.

The focus was clear from the start: final preparations for the Early Adopter Trial and the last sprint towards the 32nd International Congress of the EAES.

Over two intensive days, the project partners of the Surgical AI Hub Germany took stock of the current demonstrator status, stress-tested the ecosystem end to end, and sharpened the roadmap for the congress. The agenda included an ecosystem overview and challenge review with the Uniklinikum Dresden team, a hands-on demonstrator engineering session with contributors from across the consortium, an update on the AI model roadmap, and a full rehearsal of the Early Adopter presentation.

One workflow, fully connected – with Chimaera ImViA at its core

A key goal for EAES 2026 is to make the entire workflow tangible for visitors, not just to present it, but to let people experience it live. It starts with secure upload and automated anonymisation of surgical videos, continues with AI-supported analysis in Chimaera ImViA – for example detecting surgical phases or bleeding – and ends with synchronised result visualisation in the Surgical Quality App.

This is exactly where our contribution comes in. At Chimaera, we provide the ImViA technology that powers the annotation workflows and AI-supported image analysis at the centre of this ecosystem. In Berlin, the team tested precisely this part of the chain: how reliably videos move through Chimaera ImViA, how the model results are validated, and how everything plays out together with the up- and downstream components in a live setting. At EAES, this is what visitors will get to try out for themselves, seeing first-hand how surgical video annotation and AI-supported analysis come together in practice.

A big thank-you goes to the KARL STORZ Visitor and Training Center Berlin for hosting us. Once again, this hackathon demonstrated the value of in-person collaboration for a project of this complexity, both technically and personally.
