Chimaera ImViA Goes Live: From Prototype to a Growing Research Platform
Digital innovation in surgical AI creates real value when it becomes part of robust, reproducible research workflows.
That is exactly the milestone we are celebrating today: Chimaera ImViA is now live at two leading research institutions in Germany.
Following its successful deployment at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, the platform is now also in use at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg.
This marks an important step in the evolution of Chimaera ImViA – from a project component within a research consortium to a growing platform for the annotation and analysis of surgical video data.


What Is Chimaera ImViA?
Chimaera ImViA ‒ our Web Application Ecosystem for Image and Video Annotation, Analysis & AI ‒ brings structure and scalability to complex surgical video data. The browser-based platform enables interdisciplinary research teams to annotate, organize, and prepare surgical video recordings efficiently, securely, and collaboratively for AI-driven analysis.
Core capabilities include:

• Quality-assured multi-user workflows
• Cross-site collaboration within research networks
• AI-powered video object segmentation

Why These “Go Live” Milestones Matter
Software releases are always exciting, but in scientific AI development, one question matters most:
How well does a system support real-world research workflows?
Each new deployment enables researchers from medicine, computer science, and engineering to validate workflows under real research conditions, provide feedback, and continuously improve the platform. In Dresden and Heidelberg, the first user groups are now establishing productive annotation and analysis workflows for surgical video data. Every new site contributes additional perspectives, datasets, and methodological requirements. This helps build more robust and generalizable AI models.
Chimaera ImViA – Built for Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Innovation in surgical AI does not happen in isolation – it emerges at the intersection of medicine, research, and technology.
From the very beginning, Chimaera ImViA was designed for distributed interdisciplinary teams within the Surgical AI Hub Germany (SAIHG). Within this research initiative, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, partners from medicine, academia, and technology work together on data-driven methods for the computational analysis of surgical processes. With multiple active sites now using the platform, ImViA demonstrates what shared research infrastructure can look like in practice: one platform, many perspectives.
The Next Chapter of Surgical AI
The future of surgical AI depends on trustworthy models, high-quality training data, and close interdisciplinary collaboration. Precisely annotated surgical video data is a key prerequisite for this progress.
Chimaera ImViA provides the methodological foundation to build such datasets at scale, enabling the development of future AI systems for research and potential translation into clinical applications.
And this is only the beginning.
