Exchange, Progress, and Fresh Energy – Our Hackathon in January 2026

In January, the Surgical AI Hub Germany team came together once again – this time in Dresden for our fifth hackathon. Three days filled with intensive discussions, spontaneous ideas, and hands-on collaboration highlighted how much substance and momentum this joint effort has gained.

For us at Chimaera, it was inspiring to see how the different subprojects are continuing to grow together. Direct exchange between research, clinics, and industry made the great potential of this interdisciplinary work tangible. The shared energy of identifying challenges and developing solutions together is what makes these events so valuable.

Focus on Integration and Demonstrator Development

The sessions were not only about technical details and interfaces but also about the next development stage of our demonstrator. Our upcoming milestone is clear: at EAES 2026 in Athens, we aim to showcase a fully connected workflow – from uploading and automated anonymization of surgical videos, through AI-assisted analysis in ImViA (for instance, detecting surgical phases or bleedings), all the way to synchronized visualization of the results within the Surgical Quality App. Interested users will also be able to annotate selected video sequences directly in ImViA.

Our goal is clear: the demonstrator should not only be presented but actively experienced during the congress. With this in mind, we are now focusing on further integrating all components and finalizing their interaction for a smooth live setup.

A big thank-you goes to the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden for the warm hospitality, as well as to Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Martin Wagner, Marlene Karl, and the entire organizing team for their dedication. Once again, this fifth hackathon of the Surgical AI Hub has shown the remarkable value of personal exchange – both professionally and personally – in a project of this complexity.
